| Born and raised in Maryland, Monkmus studied at the Rhode Island School of Design where he majored in illustration and filmmaking. In the following years, upon graduation, he led a nomadic existence, which was spurred on by his employment at numerous movie and television studios in various cities. Stops included San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, Portland, Montreal, and Toronto. During this time he also endeavored to create a few independent projects, which were more reflective of his quirky imagination and sensibilities. His collaborations with Kid Koala soon followed, as well as many short films and commercial projects. Recent work by Monkmus includes music videos for Death Cab for Cutie and additions to his animated comic, ĪThe Topside Rag.'
