Dan was born in Cape Verde in 1974 and grew up just outside Lisbon, Portugal. After high school he studied at Rhode Island School of Design. For his degree projects, he produced his first film, Carnal Ground (1994), as well as a series of large paintings.
After graduating, Dan moved to Boston and worked for Olive Jar Studios, directing commercials and TV programs for PBS, Cartoon Network, and Nesquik, among others. During this time he produced his first short film, Minotaur (1999). While in Boston, Dan helped to form Handcrankedfilm, a film makers' collective, along with Jeff Sias, Bryan Papciak, and Jake Mahaffy.
Since 2001, Dan has been teaching at RISD. In 2003, he was awarded a Moving Image Fund production grant by the LEF Foundation to produce his latest film, Fable (2005). This year he was the recipient of a Fellowship in Film and Video grant from the Rhode Island State Council for the Arts.
