Semiconductor
Magnetic Movie
The secret lives of invisible magnetic fields are imagined as chaotic, ever-changing geometries. The film interprets narrated descriptions by scientists at NASA’s Space Sciences Laboratory in Berkeley, and the CGI animation is generated in response to actual audio recordings of space - revealing the universe in flux - a documentary of a fictional world. “Magnetic Movie” won a British Animation Award in 2008.

Ruth Jarman and Joe Gerhardt have worked together as Semiconductor since 1999, and are based in Brighton, UK. Sound drives their work - creating, controlling and deciphering visual images. They have an exhibition at the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum, Washington DC, November - December 2008.
