Recently, he was recommended for a programming contract job at a financial consulting firm. When asked by HR for his hourly rate, he replied "$50 an hour". They said they would have to get back to him about that. They called him back the next day and apologized that they could not offer his full hourly rate as their budgets were tight. "I'm sorry we can't offer you $250 an hour," they reported, "Will you still take the job for $195 an hour?" He paused and then said that he would, indeed, take the job at this discounted rate.
