Aleksandra Domanovic

We communicated with Aleksandra Domanovic via Word documents, and are very happy to bring you the results.

LUMEN ECLIPSE: How did you make D, E, G, A? What images were you working from, and how did you transform them? How was the sound track made?

ALEKSANDRA DOMANOVIC: I filmed different people, each singing the tone scale and some beats. One sound was chosen from each person and composed into a song using only the tones D, E, G and A, plus snare, hi hat and the base drum sound. I composed the song in After Effects, which was very strenuous, because I had to render bits and pieces every time I wanted to hear them. The video is synesthetic, each sound takes the shape of its waveform, behind which the singer is visible.

LUMEN ECLIPSE: Where are you from? Where are you now?

ALEKSANDRA DOMANOVIC: I was born in Serbia, grew up in Slovenia and am currently living between Berlin, Vienna and Ljubljana.

LUMEN ECLIPSE: How do you feel about artmaking that draws on background and personal history?

ALEKSANDRA DOMANOVIC: I find this approach appealing in a way because you get to know more about the artist and feel like you have made an intimate connection. Especially with artists of my generation, I feel we share a collective personal history. Growing up at the same time and being parented by the same culture industry.

LUMEN ECLIPSE: Is it important for art to be funny?

ALEKSANDRA DOMANOVIC: Sometimes yes, sometimes no.

LUMEN ECLIPSE: Did you go to art school? Is art school worth the money?

ALEKSANDRA DOMANOVIC: Studying is free in Slovenia and the tuition fees were not high when I studied in Vienna. I know that the situation is difficult in other parts of the world, and the tuitions can be enormous and unaffordable. In my opinion it is important to have some kind of guidance, it can come in a form of a university, some kind of a mentor, internet… I studied architecture and graphic design and the most valuable thing I learned is that I do not want to do any of those things exclusively. At the moment my biggest interest lies in art.

LUMEN ECLIPSE: Are you interested in advertising?

ALEKSANDRA DOMANOVIC: Yes.

LUMEN ECLIPSE: What's the most exciting way to show your work? Where do you want people to see it? Does it matter what kind of space, what kind of screen, what bandwidth, etc?

ALEKSANDRA DOMANOVIC: I really enjoy viewing my work in a museum or a gallery context, because it’s not the most common one for me yet. In such situations the screens and other specifications can be detrimental to the reception of the work. The most exciting thing about having my work online is the comments it generates and the blogs that link to it. The technical specifications are irrelevant on the net, and the deviations from the original can be very interesting.

LUMEN ECLIPSE: What do you list as your occupation on official forms?

ALEKSANDRA DOMANOVIC: Depends on the form. I love to lie on online registration forms.

LUMEN ECLIPSE: Are you a participant in web 2.0 activities? Do you feel comfortable putting yourself out there on the internet?

ALEKSANDRA DOMANOVIC: With three other friends we run a blog called VVORK.com. I spend a lot of time online every day, researching, posting… Sometimes we also post our own projects and I find it very inspiring to know that 10.000 people are going to see your work that day.

I don’t feel that comfortable with the term web 2.0, the participatory and social aspects of the web have been around for longer than the term itself. But people did have a different attitude towards internet back then. I remember trying to join in a conversation on a IRC channel when I was 12 or so, nobody wanted to talk to me, it was very insider-group oriented. Now everybody ads you as a friend on MySpace, without even looking at your profile.

LUMEN ECLIPSE: Are you worried about access to the internet and/or digital ownership issues?

ALEKSANDRA DOMANOVIC: The reality is that only a privileged minority has internet access. So I cannot stand behind the idea of internet being a free medium accessible to all.

On the topic of ownership, I am always amazed when somebody tells me they do not download films and music. I feel that everybody should be free to use, appropriate or sample existing materials without asking for permission or having to pay. Without this there is no progress and some of the most important and interesting music directions and art would have never happened. We are being constantly fed by the media without our consent, and if we feel the urge to respond in a creative way it is our right to do so.

LUMEN ECLIPSE: Can you recommend us something?
